VoIP and Data Applications Competing for Bandwidth Result in Poor Network Performance

Network General released survey findings that revealed that the management of VoIP is causing enterprise IT serious difficulty. Nearly half of IT managers surveyed discovered that both VoIP and data applications were frequently competing for bandwidth, resulting in degradation of overall network performance.

The Network General survey, conducted by leading industry research firm Enterprise Management Associates, polled senior IT executives in 100 companies across North America actively involved in VoIP deployments. The survey focused on companies using VoIP as their primary voice communication system (nearly 60 percent of respondents), and about 50 percent of those have been using VoIP for more than a year.  >>>

New Glance 2.0 Turns Phone Calls Into Instant Web Demos and Sales Presentations

Glance Networks, creators of the "one-button simple" Glance(TM) screen sharing service, today announced version 2.0, which adds full 24-bit color, faster screen update speeds and easy customer website integration. Used primarily as a sales tool for hosting instant web demos and presentations, Glance provides a quick and dependable web demo service. It includes "Guests Connect for Free(TM)" flat-rate pricing and the ability to connect instantly to nearly any PC, Mac or Linux computer without downloading software.

"Simplicity and ease of use have been two challenges inhibiting mass adoption of web conferencing," observes Mike Gotta, principal analyst, Burton Group. "There's an underserved audience within this market that simply wants to deliver a richer communication experience by combining a phone call with the sharing of a screen. The ability to present a sales pitch or demo an application should be a natural part of the conversation."  >>>

Office Workers Admit Personal IM is Too Much to Resist

Twenty-six percent of today's employees admit to spending more than two hours each workday communicating with their partner over instant messaging (IM) networks, causing potentially significant compliance and productivity concerns for companies, according to a September 2005 Web poll by Akonix Systems, Inc.

The survey of 120 US employees also revealed that 46% spend 1-30 minutes a day talking with their significant other over IM. 12% claim they send personal messages for between 30-60 minutes a day, while 17% spent one to three hours sending IMs to their partner. The average time spent on IM for non-corporate usage across the survey population was 61 minutes a day. This time-consuming habit can lead to lost productivity, costing companies thousands of dollars a year, per employee.  >>>

Videoconferencing Market to Return to Strong Growth

According to a new market research study released by Wainhouse Research, the enterprise videoconferencing industry will return to its historic growth rates over the next five years. Unit shipments are showing strong growth across the globe, with 2004 and 2005 results indicating a return to the industry's historical growth rates. According to the forecast, unit shipments will experience a five-year compound annual growth rate of over 18% while average selling prices are expected to stabilize across all product lines.

The report forecasts that the market for room videoconferencing systems will grow from approximately $645 million in 2004 to nearly $1.2 billion in 2009. Growth will be spurred by new all-in-one systems that fill the low end of the room market and the high end of the personal market, improved performance enabled by high fidelity audio and high definition video, enhanced display systems, and systems that are easier to use.  >>>

Four-Billion-Dollar E-Learning Industry Growing As Powerful Tool For Smaller Businesses

Electronic-learning, which is increasingly used as a productivity tool by small to medium-size businesses (SMBs), has become a $4 billion industry growing at 10-15 percent yearly, reported the Information Technology Solution Providers Alliance (ITSPA), a national, non-profit group that helps SMBs understand how technology and local technology providers can help them succeed.

"The implications of the e-learning phenomenon are enormous for SMBs, particularly as they look for ways to go head-to-head with large corporations," said ITSPA President Russell Morgan.
