A Second Chance: Helping People Return to Work After a Disabling Injury or Illness
Brian Bell was a senior investigator with the Los Angeles District Attorney's office when he injured his back during a physical agility test. No longer able to perform his regular duties, he began receiving disability benefits, but didn't give up on his hope to someday work again as a detective. With the help of his disability insurance provider and his own entrepreneurial spirit, Bell recently launched a background check business that enables him to earn more money than he received from his disability benefits and continue working in the investigative field he so enjoyed.
Bell is one of several individuals speaking about his successful vocational rehabilitation at one of three CIGNA Group Insurance featured events next week in Pittsburgh, PA, Dallas, TX and Glendale, CA. CIGNA Group Insurance Enhances Its Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) Services
Introduced in 1993, the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was designed to provide job protection and peace of mind for employees who desire extended time off from work to attend to a medical or family issue. However, for employers, FMLA has created numerous administrative headaches as companies struggle to manage the many complexities of the law. In a 2001 HRnext.com study, more than half of Human Resource executives surveyed ranked FMLA as their biggest regulatory concern, above Affirmative Action and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Many Single Employees Go It Alone When Choosing Benefits During Open Enrollment
According to a MetLife Study -- 34% of Marrieds Don't Consult Spouse/Partner and 59% of Singles Don't Consult Anyone about their Benefits Decisions; -- 38% of Singles Make Benefits Decisions at the Last Minute - Nearly Half are Self-Proclaimed Procrastinators.
During benefits open enrollment season, 59% of singles are making benefits decisions on their own without consultation from financial planners or even their peers, and one-third (34%) of marrieds are not consulting their spouse, according to the MetLife Study of Open Enrollment Benefits Trends. In nearly two out of five cases (38%), singles are waiting until right before the open enrollment deadline at work to make benefits decisions. Nearly half of this group (46%) blames it on procrastination, 30% say they are too busy and 12% are overwhelmed by too many choices. Overall, men (32%) are more likely to procrastinate than women (23%). >>>

MetLife Research Reveals Long-Term Care Insurance is Fastest Growing Benefit
|
Amid rising healthcare costs, employers are seeking cost-effective ways to enhance their benefits offerings, minimize administrative costs, and address the diverse work/life needs of their employees. The result: many companies are expanding their benefits packages by supplementing employer-funded offerings with voluntary benefits, for which employees pay some or all of the costs. That is one key finding of a study conducted in April based on MetLife's client database of benefit trends and offerings at 88 of the top one hundred FORTUNE 500(C) companies(1). Over the past few years, some of MetLife's largest corporate customers have expanded their employee benefits offerings in several key areas. In particular, long-term care insurance (currently offered by 33% of the companies included in the analysis) is the fastest growing employee benefit, up 61% over the past four years. Disability insurance (39%) is the second most popular in terms of growth, up 28% during the same period. >>>
